The Scottish Schoolsport Federation (SSF) was established in 1988 and its membership has been the various Scottish School Sports Associations and youth sections of Scottish governing bodies of sport.

The federation has three main functions:-

(a) As the Scottish Confederation of School Sport to facilitate membership of the Internal Schoolsport Federation (ISF).

(b) As a Scottish organisation to lobby the various government agencies on the central issues which surround school sport, and in particular sport in the “extended curriculum” of schools.

(c) As a network or a forum for communication between the various member organisations.

In 2004/5 membership of the SSF was extended to include the thirty-two Local authorities. This now gives an impetus to the links and networking possibilities between the member sport associations and the local authorities. At the time of writing, sixteen local authorities are members of the SSF.
